About the conference

The International Circularity Conference (ICC 2027) in Western Australia uniting industries, researchers, and policymakers. Hosted by Murdoch University, ICC fosters global collaboration on innovations and strategies for a circular systems future developments. The 2027 conference will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, and specialized workshops. Held at Murdoch University in Perth, just 15 minutes from the CBD, delegates will experience Australia’s sunniest capital, renowned for its cultural diversity and natural beauty.

Welcome to the International Circularity Conference (ICC 2027)

On behalf of the Global South Nexus, I am delighted to welcome you to the International Circularity Conference (ICC 2027), taking place in Perth, Western Australia, from 7 – 13 February 2027. The Global South Nexus (GSN) is a collaborative platform committed to advancing sustainable development through critical thinking, innovation, and practice-based dialogue. By fostering meaningful North–South partnerships, GSN supports the creation of interdisciplinary, context-sensitive knowledge grounded in the lived realities of Global South communities. Our co-sponsorship of ICC 2027 with the International Circular System Association reflects GSN’s strong dedication to building capacity, strengthening collaboration, and supporting shared leadership among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from both the Global South and the Global North. This year’s conference centres on zero-waste and circular economy practices worldwide, offering a dynamic space for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaborative problem-solving. Dr Atiq Zaman (ICC 2027 Chair)

 

ATIQ ZAMAN, SHORT BIO:
Associate Professor Dr Atiq Zaman is an internationally renowned expert in circular economy and zero waste practices, and the Founding Co-Director of the Global South Nexus (GSN). He holds several prominent research leadership roles, including: Circular Economy Engagement Coordinator for the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme at UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, Switzerland (May–September 2025), Member of the UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) (2022–2026),  Curtin Node Manager of the Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub, funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) under the National Environmental Science Programme Phase 2 (NESP2) (2021–2027), Circular Economy Research Theme Leader at the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc) (2024–ongoing), Circular Economy Research Leader at the Curtin Institute for Energy Transition (2023–ongoing). Dr Zaman has published around 80 peer-reviewed outputs, including authored and edited books, journal articles, and industry, technical, and policy reports. His contributions have earned him the title of the world's top zero-waste expert according to ScholarGPS and a place in the world’s top 2% of scientists by Stanford/Elsevier. His forthcoming co-edited book titled “Circular Economy: Theories, Metrics, and Global Practices” is scheduled for publication with Routledge in 2026.

 


 

Welcome to the International Circularity Conference (ICC 2027)

I have over 30 years of experience working in forestry and natural ecosystems globally. I've delved into the impacts of biological invasions and the critical role of microorganisms in ecosystems, forestry, and horticulture. Partnering with universities and government organizations worldwide, and backed by industry and government agencies, my work has delivered tangible, impactful results for end users.

I am the Executive Director at the Harry Butler Institute, Murdoch University and lead the charge in advancing our sustainability research strategy and elevating our global reputation. My mission is to drive groundbreaking research in conservation and natural resource management.

As Executive Director at the Harry Butler Institute at Murdoch University my current focus is on implementing and operationalizing the university's research strategy for sustainability and enhancing the Institute's national and international reputation in advancing scientific knowledge and understanding of the natural environment, with a particular emphasis on conservation and management of natural resources.

As a researcher I have worked on the impacts of biological invasions and the role of microorganisms in natural ecosystems, plantation forestry, and horticulture. My research has been conducted in collaboration with national and international universities and government research organizations, with support from industry and government agencies and has had tangible and demonstrable impacts on end users. I have contributed highly cited academic outputs in the areas of eucalypt diseases, Phytophthora in natural ecosystems, and complex biotic and abiotic interactions in tree declines.

Aside from my day job, I am the General Secretary on the council of the Royal Society of Western Australia and the Chair of the Board of the Wetlands Centre, a NFP organisation focussed on urban wetlands conservation and restoration and environmental education.
